Opus One 2005
Napa Valley, CA. $250
Voluptuous & rather wild claret-like aromas of currant, black raspberry,
leather, dark chocolate, spices and tobacco. Velvety in texture, but
also juicy and firmly structured, with mouth coating flavors of dark
berries, bitter cherry, minerals, cola and bitter chocolate.
Argyle Nuthouse Pinot Noir 2005
Willamette Valley, Oregon $85
This very powerful whopper of a wine seems to have everything: aromas
of a concentrated blackberry, essences of cedar cigar box, roasted
pecan, vanilla bean, jam and dark chocolate. Black Forest torte, and
a wonderful black truffle earthiness lead the palate into a long finish.
Duckhorn
Three Palms Merlot 2005
Napa Valley, CA $125
This concentrated wine has a velvety texture, bright acidity, and firm,
well-integrated tannins. The aroma is layered with red fruit, dried
herbs, allspice, vanilla bean, and a hint of dust. On the palate, the
flavors are dominated by dark red fruits, including ripe strawberries
and dried cherries, with inviting accents of toasted oak, chocolate,
and spice. A powerful wine with plenty of finesse. 94 points, Wine
Enthusiast.
